You ran out of RAM because GIMP v2.10.6 doesn't respect the tile cache value, if you set it to default 16gb it will happily uses 27gb and your windows 7 runs out of RAM.

Once path is created it is visible on ALL LAYERS, its basically entity of its own not related to any of the layers. You can find paths from layers / channels / paths. GraphicsMagick can convert XCF to BMP/PNG etc, however I could not figure out how to export individual layers. GIMP will save to PSD which preserves layers.
