HOWTO add noise to heightmap.

Import the heightmap you got, start 3d sapphire and run a noise tool on it

  1. file → import → heightfield
  2. click 3d icon to get into 3d sapphire
  3. press H for heightfield tools menu, choose perlin noise
  4. paint using the brush

Or run heightmap through the design map and apply a small values to the generation parameters. Then check if its changed too much and if its not then merge it with the original one with lets say 20-50% strength. This with file → import → merge heightmaps and use a greyscale mask to determine the merge strength.

Perlin noise brush in L3DT 3d sapphire is fine for small areas like forests, but unusable for upgrading whole terrain with slight noise, way too much to “paint” and to make mistakes with too much painting etc.

Another method:

One way could be making a grey image in your choice of image editor. applying noise filter/effect thingy on it. maybe a little bit of blur. then save that out and import to l3dt as heightmap. then set the vertical range to whatever you want your noise to do for instance between -1 and 1 meters. then export that as .hfz heightmap. then import your working heightmap. use the file - import - merge heightmaps tool to load the noise.hfz and the mask of the areas and change the processing type to ADD.
